So much happened in 4 days in Florianopolis (Brazil), a congress to enter the history book of the Panamerican Trauma Society (PTS). First and above all, it was a joint meeting of the Brazilian Trauma Society (SBAIT) (15^th Congress), the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) (35^th Congress), and the PTS (35^th Congress). In a time when the world is fragmenting and polarizing, the PTS, SBAIT, and CBC proved they can (and want) to work together.

The three Societies have so much in common, including similar aspirations. They are constituted by diverse groups of health professionals that share the goal of improving patients’ lives. While the CBC brings together surgeons from all specialties, SBAIT and PTS bring together diverse health professionals (nurses, paramedics, surgeons, etc.), all with the same goal (patients), and the SBAIT/PTS focuses on injured patients. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the Societies not only complement each other but, in fact, they can boost each other to accomplish more.

Societies are necessary to bring together professionals to provide goals, legitimacy, and direction to the members while fostering the growth of each and all members. Humans accomplish incredible feats when they cooperate. The Congress in Florianopolis reinforced the importance to continue supporting your local/national/international Society while increasing your active participation.

The second reason for the Congress in Brazil to be memorable is the quality of the presentations and discussions. The PTS rooms were full, as attendings of the CBC congress moved freely to the PTS/SBAIT rooms. Excellent presentations showed the enormity of trauma and how it affects us all.

The trauma system was a major topic in this Congress. The realization is that most of the world has some form of pre-hospital and hospital care, but the system is broken, and they often do not work together. The best trauma nurse or trauma surgeon can do nothing if the severely injured patient is taken to the wrong hospital and not prepared to care for them. The PTS continues to advocate trauma systems as the best way to improve the care of injured patients.

Finally, the renewal of our Society's leadership. At the top, Dr Marttos is the new Executive Director, and Dr Paula Ferrada will be the next President. The PTS has so many colleagues to thank that it is not possible to mention all. From Dr Scalea to Ms Gladys Shanklin, Scarlet, Dr Foianini, Marcelo Ribeiro, Ottolino, Salamea, Fraga, Ordonez, to …….. (so many). Not to forget Drs Mauricio Goudinho e Parreira (SBAIT) and so many others from Brazil (Drs. Van Bahten, Petry, Bregeiron, and others).

The 35^th Congress reassured us the PTS is stable and can count on partnerships across Latin and North America, such as SBAIT and CBC. We all look forward to a bigger and stronger PTS.

Tanta coisa aconteceu em 4 dias em Florianópolis (Brasil), um congresso para entrar para para a história da Sociedade Panamericana (PTS). Acima de tudo, foi um encontro conjunto da Sociedade Brasileira de Trauma, SBAIT (15º Congresso), Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões, CBC (35º Congresso) e PTS (35º Congresso). Numa época em que o mundo se fragmenta e as pessoas polarizam, a PTS, SBAIT e CBC provaram que podem (e querem) trabalhar juntos.

As três Sociedades têm muito em comum, incluindo aspirações semelhantes. São constituídos por diversos grupos de profissionais da saúde que compartilham o objetivo de melhorar a vida dos pacientes. Enquanto o CBC reúne cirurgiões de todas as especialidades, o SBAIT e a PTS reúnem diversos profissionais da saúde (enfermeiros, paramédicos, cirurgiões etc.)–todos com o mesmo objetivo (pacientes) com a SBAIT/PTS focando nos pacientes traumatizados. Portanto, não é de surpreender que as Sociedades não apenas se complementam, mas de fato, podem impulsionar uma a outra para fazer mais.

As sociedades são necessárias para reunir profissionais, para dar objetivo, legitimidade e direção aos membros, ao mesmo tempo promover o crescimento individual (e de todos) os seus membros. Os humanos realizam feitos incríveis quando cooperam. O Congresso em Florianópolis reforçou a importância de continuar apoiando sua Sociedade local/nacional/internacional e aumentar sua participação ativa.

A segunda razão para o este Congresso ser memorável foi a qualidade das apresentações e discussões. As salas do PTS estavam lotadas, pois os participantes do congresso do CBC se moviam livremente para as salas do PTS/SBAIT (e vice-versa). Excelentes apresentações mostraram a enormidade do Trauma e como ele afeta a todos nós.

O sistema de trauma foi um tema importante neste congresso. A percepção de que a maior parte do mundo tem alguma forma de atendimento pré-hospitalar e hospitalar, mas o sistema está quebrado e muitas vezes eles não conseguem funcionar juntos. A melhor enfermeira ou cirurgião de trauma não podem fazer nada se o paciente gravemente ferido for levado para o hospital errado que não esta preparado para cuidar dele. O PTS continua a defender que sistemas de trauma são a melhor maneira de melhorar o atendimento aos pacientes traumatizados.

Finalmente, a renovação da liderança da nossa Sociedade. No topo, o Dr. Marttos é o novo Diretor Executivo e a Dra. Paula Ferrada será a próxima Presidente. O PTS tem tantos colegas a agradecer que não dá para citar todos aqui. Desde o Dr. Scalea, a Sra. Gladys Shanklin, Scarlet, Dr. Foianini, Marcelo Ribeiro, Ottolino, Salamea, Fraga, Ordonez, …….. (e tantos outros). Sem esquecer os Drs. Mauricio Goudinho e Parreira (SBAIT) e tantos outros do Brasil (Drs. Van Bahten, Petry, Bregeiron, e outros).

O 35º Congresso nos assegurou que a PTS está estável e pode contar com parcerias da America Latina e America do Norte como da SBAIT e CBC. Todos nós esperamos um PTS cada dia maior e mais forte.
